This is my list, if someone thinks I should add, remove, or change and item, I am all ears. And the chemicals I am getting but did not list.

- Fluid recapture devices

Laura Questions About Steam Carpet Extractor

Laura asks…

Damp in my University room – What can I do? And what am I responsible for?

I’m in my first year at University, and I’m staying in a ground floor room in the halls of residence. I have a walk-in shower in my room. I recently pulled my bed away from the wall to hoover underneath it (yes! wow! a student that cleans!) and I found a large, thick, black patch of mold. On further inspection around my room I’ve also found a patch behind my wardrobe, which has also taken over a corner of carpet and is now black, and some round the window frames. I reported the matter and they are sending someone to bleach the walls tomorrow. They think it is caused due to condensation when I have a shower, however I’m not so sure as I always put my extractor fan on whilst in the shower and open my windows afterwards to avoid them steaming up. And the mold is only building up on the outside walls, I have none on my adjoining walls. How do I manage the mold in the future? Is a de-humidifier a good buy – and if so should I have to buy it? And if they refuse to do anything to treat it, what are my rights as a student renting the room from them?

Thanks for your help guys! xxx

Don’t let the fear mongers scare you. The mold that’s growing on the concrete and the carpet is NOT the really dangerous kind that the media hyped up a couple of years ago. That kind ONLY grows on paper products such as drywall paper backing. Regardless, while it can be bothersome to someone with allergies, to date there is no medical study that provides a link between this mold and long term adverse effects on the body. I really wish people would quit perpetuating the baseless fear that has been generated by the media.

Just let them clean the mold up, then if you have the money, go to a home improvement store and purchase a small dehumidifier, make sure to keep it emptied.

HELP. Can i get out of AST agreement 24hrs after signing because of filthy conditions on closer inspection?

Hi
Please can someone help me? I signed an a.s.t agreement @ 15.30 on 23-02-10. After being messed around terribly by estate agents, loosing deposit on hire van as was late arriving due to est- age incompetence, finally picked up keys from property itself after waiting around outside in the rain while they did the inventory (by this time it was dark and had no moving van so just left property straight away). On closer inspection the next morning during the daylight I found it to be in a completely disgusting condition in every room, with yellow/orange/black/green grease dripping from every surface in the kitchen (which unfortunately did not improve throughout the entire house-bedrooms, bathroom, toilet, living room YUCK)! fridge was black and yellow, cupboard door (loose plywood board) under the sink fell of and hit me on the head, 1 room may have been able to use as a breakfast area (old coal house) had no heating and you probably could have stored refrigerated goods in. carpets stained, wall paper had brown greasey patches on it in the bedrooms….I could go on all day…Landlord predictably being a complete arse about it and “assuresme that when the inventory was done, apart from extractor fan, the house was perfectly clean” they are not willing to help other that to offer me their resident steam cleaner. Has anyone got any ideas please (all welcome) as I took legal advice over the net but agent informed me that my adice was completely wrong???? Have to move out of current property in 4 + half hours, had to put everything into storage last minute wednesday morning, after-of-course finding and hiring the only available van on the planet I think and today I have the joy of finding a bed + breakfast for tonight for myself and my 7yr old son, limited funds, find another bond + 1month rent in advance just incase they do let me out of the agreement + to secure another property have to pay the deposits before the others are released. HHHEEELLLLPPPP!!!!! Wopuld be eternally grateful!

Take photos of everything – and I mean everything. Without proof you’re sunk.

Inform your landlord that the property is unfit for habitation and you are consulting the CAB and bringing evidence to the local authority.

Demand your deposit back and threaten legal action if he does not return it. (Small claims court – no costs regime, very easy).

Move elsewhere and then worry about this landlord.

Meanwhile, do exactly that: let the CAB and the council see the evidence and they’ll advise on your next step. Don’t live in a pigsty for the sake of a deposit.
