Susan Questions About Carpet Repair How To

Susan asks…

Has your dog ever chewed a hole in your carpet?

My dog decided it would be fun to chew up my carpet while I wasn’t home. She ripped it up all the way down to the cement underneath! My apartment complex doesn’t know I have a dog so I need to fix this before they come in on Thursday for some maintenance work. Has anyone else ever had this problem, and if so, how did you repair your carpet? I don’t have much money to spend but it has to be fixed. HELP!!!
FYI- I’m not a bad dog owner and she gets a good amount of exercise usually, but she got spayed the night before this incident and the vet told me to keep her in a small dark area like the bathroom for 24 hours. And she wasn’t supposed to run, jump, or be outside for 7-9 days so it’s not like I could take her for a walk or anything. So please stop leaving replies that make it seem like I’m the bad guy… I don’t need you to insult me, I just need ideas on how to fix the carpet.

Lol I feel your pain. I’ve had a dog chew threw a wall and a door. And my current dog dug a hole in the wall in the corner of my kitchen. As far as fixing it goes… You may need to just cover it up with a rug to hide it. It may look weird but its not like the landlord or whoever is gonna be like “Well this is an odd place for a rug. Are you hiding something? I’m going to look under it!” So your probably okay there… Go to a carpet store, and buy the self adhesive carpet squares (with padding built in). They should know what this is.. Bring a sample of the current carpet so you can match the color as close as possible. It doesnt really have to be exact. You will need to purchase enough squares to cover the area of the hole. Then cut the current carpet so the square(s) will fit in place. Sit um’!! Lol Then rub the crease of the new and old carpet to blend, and vacuum. This SHOULD work.. Otherwise you may need to hire a professional, or you can lie about how the hole got there and see if the landlord can help as far as fixing it (not saying thatll be easy or free tho)
Good Luck!!!!!!!

How do I repair the carpet seam where it is torn between the livingroom and kitchen?

I have carpet in my livingroom and my dog tore a couple of sections out where the carpet meets in the kitchen and that is vinly tile and there is a metal strip layed down between the livingroom and kitchen. How would I fix the tear where the damage has been done? I do not want to replace the carpet. Could I buy a little larger metal strip and tack that down between the livingroom and kitchen this is mobile home carpet. Or should I cut that section out and lay more of the same peal and stick tile down and replace the metal strip tp cover the seams where the two rooms meet? Any advice would help me. Thank you.

If this is a double wide home, then the carpet extends over the marriage line. Trying to pull it back to lay a course of peel & stick tile may be a problem.

If the damage does not extend into the room more than an inch, then you can probably just stretch the carpet, and trim off the excess. The damage can run the entire length of the carpet bar…as long as it isnt too far into the room tho, you’ve probably got enough to stretch it so that the damaged area can be trimmed off, without taking up the carpet bar. The carpet bar (metal strip) may need to be pried up just a bit, to loosen the carpet (they usually get hammered down over the carpet to grip it better)…note – pried up, not pried loose from the floor.
You might be able to move the carpet bar back into the carpeted room about 1/4″ if necessary. It will really depend on the nail hole locations. (Nails hold down the carpet bar – there will probably also be some staples along the edge of the vinyl flooring.

If the damage is more than a couple of inches into the room, but less than a few feet along the carpet bar, then you can try pulling a piece of carpet out of a closet, and use it to patch the damaged section. This will involve using a seaming iron, and straight edge. Try to pull the carpet out of the closet, so that the carpet fibers are running the same direction as that in the room, to get a better seam. (A carpet installer can do this type of repair for you).

Good Luck

Betty Questions About Carpet Repair How To

Betty asks…

I got my house broken into not too long ago and insurance replaced all the items missing and…?

they had to rip up the carpet in my living room because glass was embedded into it. So I got an estimate on the carpet repairs and got the window replaced and door replaced, because they tried to break in the door first. They then sent me a check for only the carpet that was ripped out. The carpet is out of date and they said that they can only pay me for the carpet that was ripped up even though I can’t match the carpet. They said something about depreciation recapture and all that. How should I go about this? I was thinking about putting in hard woods and paying the difference, but the estimate and the payment they sent to me had some door work and window work in it that’s already been done. Do I need to pay for that out of this check or have they already been paid.

They have paid your for your carpet as is. If you are going to replace it you can capture the differnce between actually cash value ( depreciated amount) and replacement cost. In there policy they probably agree to replace it with like kind like quality. Which mean you would need to find a replacement cost of berber or shag or what ever you have. If you want to upgrade to hardwood they would only pay for the cost of what the replacement would be not the upgrade, but this a good time to do this as it will off set alot of your cost. Good luck. Talk with your agent to see how your policy reads.

Is this a good idea to show him I can be responsible?

Two weeks ago my boyfriend broke up with me,saying that I am not an adult,he needs his space, and that I am not responsible. We had an apartment together (I moved 600 miles to be with him),but I had brought back another cat ( we were only allowed one), and I never got a job like I was suppose too.The two cats brought suspicion among our landlord, and created a whole mess, not just with the cat,but a lot of other things too (that weren’t my fault),I had to move back home because we had to break the lease.I had to send a letter recently to the Landlord saying I wanted my name off the lease in order to break it,there was also a deadline, I kinda sent the letter late and it wasn’t received on time,so now he has to keep the apartment.I know he is completely furious with me (seeing how the other day he told me he didnt want to talk to me and maybe when I become an adult maybe we will),we have to pay 1200 for carpet repairs (cats and their claws). I want the love of my life back and will do whatever it takes to do so.I have a really good job now and making excellent money. His mom told me to only give her 400$ and that will be my half of the cost (his mother is the one throwing down the money,we just have to pay her back),but I still feel awful that he has to keep the apartment even when he doesn’t even make that much,so when I get paid I am going to send his mother the 400, and give her and extra 300 to give to him to help with bills and such, because it is half my apartment also, and keep giving him money every month to help him out.Don’t say just forget about him, because I was the person who effed this all up.If you had a gf/bf who wasn’t responsible and created a lot of money problems, would you see that they can change and forgive them,if they start helping pay for everything?

I feel just awful about this, and if I don’t help I am going to feel worse.
We live 600 miles away.
